AI Side Hustles 2026: What Upwork and Fiverr's Own Data Says About AI Freelancing

AI side hustles in 2026. Which ones actually make money?
On Upwork, one kind of AI work saw earnings go up 45%. Another kind saw earnings per contract fall 13%. Same tools. Opposite results.
I made a video about it. This article has what the video has no room for: a table of seven AI side hustles with what Upwork's and Fiverr's reports say about each, the skills each one needs, how to start this week using the menus Upwork and Fiverr actually show, and a checklist before you start.

The short version
- On Upwork, freelancers doing AI work earn 34% more per hour than those not using AI (Upwork Future Workforce Index 2026).
- But generative AI and creative production work saw contract starts grow 90% while earnings per contract fell 13% (Upwork).
- Freelancers doing more complex work with AI saw earnings rise 45% (Upwork).
- On Fiverr, demand for Claude Code specialists rose 938% in six months, and searches for n8n AI automation rose 125% (Fiverr Business Trends Index 2026).
- AI-related demand grew most in Video & Animation, at 278% (Fiverr).
- Searches for human video editing grew too: 36%, and 27% for short-form video editing (Fiverr).
- The split is not AI or no AI.
It is whether the buyer could do it with one prompt.
I have worked in IT for over 20 years. I have run my own company in Japan for 22. Today, AI makes twelve videos and twelve carousel sets a day for my company. So I did not want to guess about this. I read both reports myself.
The two reports
Both came out this year.
| Upwork | Fiverr | |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Future Workforce Index 2026 | Business Trends Index 2026 |
| Published | July 14, 2026 | June 9, 2026 (GlobeNewswire) |
| What it measures | A survey of 2,400 U.S.-based skilled workers (March to April 2026), plus Upwork Marketplace platform data | Global search data on Fiverr |
| Period compared | Platform data: Q1 2026 versus the same period last year | November 2025 to April 2026, compared with May to October 2025 |
| What the numbers are | Contract starts, hourly earnings, earnings trends, survey answers | Percentage growth in searches |

Keep the last row in mind. Upwork counts contracts and earnings. Fiverr counts searches. A search is not a hire.
Upwork: AI work pays more per hour, on average

Upwork's first number is the good news. "Freelancers performing AI work on the Upwork Marketplace earn 34% more per hour than those not incorporating AI."
The full report adds that this holds "across every work category". It also says freelancers are ahead of full-time employees with AI agents: 41% use AI agents for autonomous task execution, against 34% of full-time employees.
But 34% is an average. Inside it, AI work is moving in two directions.
The side that pays less

Upwork calls it generative AI and creative production. Making images, text and other content with AI tools.

Contract starts grew 90% year over year. Earnings per contract fell 13%.
The full report has one more number the video does not. "Overall, AI-based execution tasks saw earnings fall 28% year over year." Upwork defines these as AI work that "generally focuses on producing discrete outputs, such as text, images, or video".
Upwork's own reading: "lower-complexity AI execution may become less lucrative as it scales."
Think about why. If anyone can type a prompt and get the result, the buyer can do it too. Or hire the next person for less.
The side that pays more
Freelancers doing more complex work with AI saw earnings increase 45% year over year (Upwork; the full report dates this to Q1 2026).
AI-augmented professional services, where people who already know a field bring AI into it, grew 72% in volume, with earnings rising 22% (Upwork).

Upwork has a name for this person: the AI Orchestrator.

The full report spells out what that person does. Someone who "understands business goals, selects and coordinates the right tools, manages AI agents and workflows, evaluates output quality, and applies human judgment where context matters."
So the split is not AI or no AI. It is judgment or no judgment.
Fiverr: what businesses are searching for

Fiverr's data points the same way.

"Demand for Claude Code specialists has surged 938% on Fiverr over the last six months." Fiverr says businesses want freelancers who can use it "to automate their workflows, build AI agents, and ship products faster".
The same release lists related searches:
- n8n AI automation: +125%
- Vibe coding: +61%
- AI voice agents: +49%
These are not press-one-button jobs. You have to understand someone's business before you can automate it.
By category, AI-related demand grew fastest in content, not in back-end work.
| Fiverr category | Growth in demand for AI-related services |
|---|---|
| Video & Animation | +278% |
| Programming & Tech | +94% |
| Digital Marketing | +62% |
| Data | +3% |
Video: AI makes more of it, people still edit it
Video is the biggest mover on Fiverr.
- AI UGC video ads: +265%
- AI video ads: +63%
- YouTube automation faceless channels: +239% in Digital Marketing, +230% in Video & Animation
- YouTube thumbnails: +52%
- YouTube video promotion: +31%

Here is what most videos about AI side hustles skip. Searches for human editing grew as well.
- Video editing: +36%
- Short-form video editing: +27%
- Reels editing: +57%
Fiverr also compares platforms. Instagram grew 147% in Digital Marketing and 149% in Graphics & Design. TikTok grew 26% in Digital Marketing and 17% in Video & Animation.
AI makes more video. Someone still has to make it good.
Seven AI side hustles, and what the reports say about each
These are the side hustles the video covers. The numbers are the reports' own. Neither report gives a dollar rate for any of them, so there are no dollar figures here.
| AI side hustle | What Upwork says | What Fiverr says |
|---|---|---|
| AI content creation (images, text, content) | Generative AI and creative production: contract starts +90%, earnings per contract -13%. AI-based execution tasks overall: earnings -28%. | Not broken out |
| Your field plus AI | AI-augmented professional services: volume +72%, earnings +22% | Not broken out |
| AI orchestration (complex AI work) | Earnings +45% for freelancers doing more complex work with AI | Not broken out |
| AI automation with Claude Code or n8n | Not broken out | Claude Code specialists +938%. n8n AI automation +125%. Related: vibe coding +61%, AI voice agents +49%. Programming & Tech +94%. |
| AI video ads | Not broken out | AI UGC video ads +265%. AI video ads +63%. Video & Animation +278%. |
| Faceless YouTube channels | Not broken out | YouTube automation faceless channels +239% (Digital Marketing), +230% (Video & Animation). YouTube thumbnails +52%. |
| Human video editing | Not broken out | Video editing +36%. Short-form video editing +27%. Reels editing +57%. |
One number covers all AI work on Upwork: 34% more per hour than work without AI.
The skills each one needs
The middle column uses the reports' own descriptions where they have one.
| AI side hustle | What the work is, in the reports' words | What you need to bring |
|---|---|---|
| AI content creation | "Producing discrete outputs, such as text, images, or video" (Upwork) | A field you know, so the output turns into a result the buyer cannot get from one prompt |
| Your field plus AI | "Domain experts integrate AI into established fields" (Upwork) | Real experience in the field. The AI is the add-on. |
| AI orchestration | "Understands business goals, selects and coordinates the right tools, manages AI agents and workflows, evaluates output quality" (Upwork) | Judgment, communication, and accountability for the outcome |
| AI automation (Claude Code, n8n) | Claude Code: "writing, testing, and deploying". n8n: "connects apps and AI models into automated workflows" (Fiverr) | Understanding the client's workflow before you automate it |
| AI video ads | AI UGC video ads and AI video ads (Fiverr) | Knowing what makes an ad work for the client's product |
| Faceless YouTube channels | Fiverr reads the growth as "optimizing distribution and packaging, not just production" | Packaging: titles, thumbnails, promotion |
| Human video editing | Video editing, short-form video editing, Reels editing (Fiverr) | Editing judgment. The part AI does not do for you. |
What I see in my own company

I see this every day. AI makes twelve videos a day for my company. Every one of them goes through review before it goes out.
The making got cheap. The judging did not. That is where the value moved.
How to pick

This is how I would think about it.
- One. Start from a field you already know. Your job, your hobby, your industry.
- Two. Sell the result, not the output. Not a hundred AI images. A product page that sells.
- Three. If the buyer could do it with one prompt, do not build a side hustle on it.
Upwork's report says the same thing in its own words. It tells freelancers to sell "business results rather than AI-generated outputs".
The menus, as Upwork and Fiverr name them
Before the steps, here is where things are. I took these from each company's own help center.
Fiverr: creating a Gig
- Go to My Business > Gigs > Create a New Gig, or click your profile picture and select Create a New Gig.
- Gig creation is only available on desktop.
- The steps are Overview, Scope & pricing, Description & FAQ, Requirements, Gallery and Publish.
- The title starts with "I will...".
- You can offer up to three packages: Basic, Standard and Premium. Each has a delivery time, a revision count and a price in USD.
- The description can be up to 1,200 characters.
- You must upload at least one image, and can add up to three. Use images you own.
- New freelancers can have up to 4 Gigs active at once.
- Before you publish, Fiverr asks for identity and tax information.
Upwork: creating a project in Project Catalog
- Go to Find Work and choose Your services, then choose the green Create Project button.
- Add a title, a category, and up to five search tags.
- Offer up to three tiers: Starter, Standard and Advanced. Prices can range from $5 USD to $500,000 USD.
- Add a gallery, client requirements, a project summary, project steps and FAQs.
- Submit it. It goes to Under Review first.
- You can have up to 20 projects in Project Catalog at a time.
Upwork: sending a proposal to a job post
- On the job post page, select Apply now.
- Set your terms, estimate how long it will take, and write your cover letter.
- Submitting a proposal uses Connects.
How to start this week
None of these steps promise income. They get you to a first offer in front of buyers.
AI content creation
- Pick one field you already know. Not "AI images". Product pages for one kind of shop, for example.
- Make three samples that show a result, not a raw output.
- On Fiverr, create a Gig. Write the title as the result: "I will..." plus what the buyer gets.
- In Requirements, ask for what you need to make it fit the buyer's business.
- Before you publish, ask yourself the one-prompt question. If the buyer could get it alone, change the offer.
Your field plus AI
- Write down the field you have worked in and one task in it that AI now speeds up for you.
- Offer that task as a fixed result in Upwork's Project Catalog: Find Work, Your services, Create Project.
- Use the Starter, Standard and Advanced tiers for three sizes of the same result.
- In project steps, show where your own judgment comes in.
AI orchestration
- Pick one business workflow you know from end to end.
- Write it down as steps: which tool, who checks, what the output is for.
- Upwork's report says to build evidence of impact: case studies, before-and-after workflow examples, measurable efficiency gains. Prepare one.
- Send proposals to job posts where the client describes a business problem, not a tool.
AI automation with Claude Code or n8n
- Automate one real workflow of your own first, so you have a working example.
- Write it up as a before and after.
- On Fiverr, create a Gig in the category that matches what you deliver.
- On Upwork, create a project or apply to job posts.
- Use Requirements to ask how the client's work runs today, before you build.
AI video ads
- Make one sample ad for a product you could actually sell.
- On Fiverr, create a Gig in the category that matches what you deliver.
- Put the sample in the Gallery.
- Use the three packages for length or number of versions.
- In Requirements, ask for the product, the audience and the platform.
Faceless YouTube channels
- Fiverr's numbers point at packaging and distribution, not just production.
- So offer a part of the channel you can do well: thumbnails, titles, or edits.
- Create a Gig in the category that matches what you deliver.
- Show finished thumbnails or edits in the Gallery, not a description of the method.
Human video editing
- Cut one short-form video from raw footage you own.
- Create a Gig with that sample in the Gallery.
- Say which platform the edit is for. Fiverr's numbers differ by platform.
- On Upwork, apply to editing job posts with the same sample.
Checklist before you start
- Pick one field you already know.
- Write the result you sell in one sentence. It should not be "AI images" or "AI text".
- Ask the one-prompt question: could the buyer get this alone?
- Make samples from material you own. Fiverr's help center says to use images you own, with no copyrighted material or images sourced from the internet.
- Prepare one case study or before-and-after example (Upwork's advice to freelancers).
- Read Fiverr's Gig policies and Prohibited Services guidelines before you create a Gig.
- Use a desktop browser for a Fiverr Gig. It cannot be created on mobile.
- Have identity and tax details ready. Fiverr asks for them before you publish, and Upwork may ask you to confirm identifying information when you start a proposal.
- Remember that Fiverr's numbers are search growth, not hires.
- Check the dates. Both reports compare periods that ended in April 2026 (Fiverr) and Q1 2026 (Upwork's platform data).
What the numbers do not tell you

- Fiverr's numbers are search growth, not hires.
- Upwork's survey is about U.S. workers.
- Upwork classifies AI jobs with an LLM-based pipeline, and says itself: "there is great uncertainty with measuring AI work."
- Neither report gives dollar earnings for any side hustle.
But both reports point the same way.

And one more number from Upwork. Skilled freelancers are now 38% of U.S. knowledge workers, up from 28% the year before. 58% of full-time employees say they are considering freelancing, up from 36%.
More people are coming. The easy AI work will get more crowded, not less.
AI did not make side hustles easy. It made judgment the thing people pay for.
